“Where’s the fire, and why the rush to leave?” For nearly an hour, only the smooth, regular sound of the car engine filtered inside the vehicle. Cars, vans, and trucks sped past, vanishing into the distance within seconds. To outsiders, their pace might seem demure, but Liam noticed the backtracking, the weaving through town streets and lanes little more than alleyways before they hit the motorway.

Avoiding the chance of someone tailing them, Liam told himself. They’d cleared the houses an hour ago, and still Paxman said nothing. More astonishingly, the man’s cell phone remained silent.

Eerily so.

Under normal circumstances, Paxman had the contraption glued to his ear.

The ache for Melanie’s touch picked at the edges of his fury. If only he could hear the sound of her voice, her tinkling laughter that spontaneously changed to a rich full-blooded belly laugh.

He’d left her behind. Vulnerable, and in the hands of people he didn’t know. Whether they were part of Paxman’s team or not, he wanted her here beside him. She belonged to him and should be at his side, not trussed up in bed with her head bound up.

He shifted in his seat, not liking the direction of his thoughts. He’d left a member of his family behind. A member of his royal family. Royal or not, what kind of man left his wife behind to face the same unknown danger alone that Paxman had sworn to keep him safe from?

By not declaring his marriage to his head of security, not only had he jeopardised Melanie’s safety, he’d compromised everything Paxman’s team had worked for during the last three years—keeping a member of the royal family safe from the insurgents.

“Oh, dear heaven!” Shock peppered through him. “What have I done?” Their parting scene in Melanie’s room replayed through his mind, and the sound of trailing footsteps—

“What?”

For a second the car slowed before picking up speed again.

“Why did we have to leave in such a hurry?”

“The place is compromised.”

“Compromised? What the—” The air inside the car turned blue with Liam’s curses. “What does that mean?”

“It means,” Paxman said, after waiting for his passenger to vent his spleen, “the safe house is no longer safe. It is believed the insurgents have discovered your whereabouts again.”

“Man, but you’re priceless. ‘It is believed’! You sound like a politician with a stick up his—backside.”

“You forget,” Paxman interrupted, “that I am paid to ensure your continued safety. In light of the new evidence to hand—”

“‘In light of the new evidence to hand!’” Liam parroted with derision and thumped his fist on the dashboard. “You’ve left Melanie to deal with the consequences on her own! With her head swathed in bandages! And when they come off? What then? What if she can’t see? How’s she supposed to protect herself if she can’t see her attackers?” Liam’s fury reignited. “Turn round. You’ve got to go back.”

When Paxman kept driving, Liam just managed to prevent himself from grabbing the wheel and yanking the car into a U-turn.

“I said, turn the car round.
